My name is Julie Hembree. As the artist of Sea Dream Designs my mission is to create and provide exceptional coastal-inspired handcrafted art that evokes the beauty and diversity of the ocean, while also promoting the use of natural and sustainable materials in the art-making process.
I want to create art that connects people with the natural beauty and wonder of the coastal environment and inspire them to care for it.
I am a woman of the sea. The salt air is my perfume, the seagulls and eagles sing my songs and the seaglass and shells on the beach are my treasures. I walk daily on our local Pacific Northwest beaches with my dog Rex. While he sniffs out the beach doggie news, I look for unusual shells and seaglass that I can use in my artwork. As a retired teacher-librarian, I am now on a journey of creativity and peaceful moments. I hope my artwork will feed your coastal spirit.
I am intrigued by the umbrella-shaped bells and trailing tentacles of jellyfish. For millions of years they have drifted along our warm and cold ocean currents. They even pre-date the dinosaurs!
I create the Jellyfish series with ocean tumbled shell pieces that I find beachcombing with Rex. The trailing tentacles are shaped with a combination of painted natural and man-made materials.
The Jellyfish series pieces are sealed on a painted 4x12 canvas or with a high-gloss epoxy resin clear coat to highlight the colors and protect the glass and shells.

Friends call my husband Tie-Dye Joe. He owns dozens of colorful tie-dye shirts. He also enjoys recreational crabbing. My tie-dye crabs are inspired by his love for fun colors and fishing for crab.
I begin by painting these authentic and ethically sourced crab shells. Then I form the crab legs with crushed glass.
The tie-dye style 3D crabs are sealed on a square canvas, framed glass or wood board with a high-gloss epoxy resin clear coat to highlight the colors and protect the glass and shells.

If you walk on a rocky Pacific Northwest beach, you will most likely encounter oyster shells. I am drawn to the shells that are heavily worn from being tossed by the seas. I wonder what story they could tell me about their life in our coastal waters.
I create my oyster art pieces with authentic oyster shells and embellish them with crushed glass, beads, seastars and other items.
The Oyster Shell series pieces are sealed on a painted square canvas with a high-gloss epoxy resin clear coat to highlight the colors and protect the shells.

When you walk on beaches around the world, you tend to collect a lot of treasures! Or at least, that's become my problem. My Mosaic series feature shells, authentic seaglass and driftwood from my bountiful personal collection.
The librarian side of me comes out in these mosaics. My students loved hunting for the hidden pictures that illustrators often leave in their picture books. My mosaics also feature a special detail in each piece, similar to the one Lois Ehlert has in her books.
I start with a blank canvas, piles of beach treasures and a shape I want to feature.
The process is similar to putting a puzzle together except I don't have any idea what the puzzle will look like until it's complete. Can you spy all the different types of shells and the hidden secret object?

Hot air Balloon Ride anyone? Sometimes my art ideas stem from a shell I've picked up, a special event coming up or a present for a friend. Whatever the reason for the creation, my whimsical pieces are one of a kind artwork that might just the perfect gift to bring that coastal spirit home.
